Black Cat Awareness Month: History, Purpose, and Actions to Debunk Myths

October isn’t just about pumpkins and spooky decorations; it’s also Black Cat Awareness Month! In this romantic autumn season, where leaves rustle and cool breezes arrive, let's take a moment to learn more about black cats—delicate yet fierce felines with glossy raven coat.
Where It All Began
Black Cat Awareness Month was created by Layla Morgan Wilde, a passionate cat advocate, who noticed that black cats were often overlooked in shelters and unfairly judged due to centuries-old superstitions. While some cultures, like ancient Egypt, revered black cats as symbols of protection and luck, others—especially in medieval Europe—linked them to witchcraft and bad omens. Wilde wanted to change that narrative, and October became the month to do it!
What It Is
This 31-day-long celebration is set out to debunk the myths and raise awareness about the overlooked black cats, especially in adoption centers. Despite being just as loving and playful as any other cat, black cats are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Frankly, this is nonsense; the goal for this month is to bring about positive change.
The Purposes and Goals
Here’s what Black Cat Awareness Month is all about:
- Promoting Adoption: Encouraging people to adopt black cats and give them the forever homes they deserve.
- Debunking Myths: Educating the public about the false superstitions that surround black cats.
- Celebrating Beauty: Highlighting the wit, whimsy, and timeless allure of black cats.
- Fostering Compassion: Reminding us that animals, like people, shouldn’t be judged by appearances.
Actions We Can Take
Want to make a splash this October? Here’s how:
- Adopt a Black Cat: If you’re ready for a furry companion, consider a black cat—they’re magical in all the best ways.
